How to Partition an SD Card and Install Darktremor Apps2SD on Android Smart Phone?

Partitioning is the act of dividing into parts and with SD Card it means to divide sd card into different virtual parts. So, you might be asking why we need to divide our sd card into two parts. This need has come into existence with devices such as Samsung Galaxy Pop/Mini GT-S5570, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Fit and other smart phones that have relatively low internal storage (only about 180 MB or 250 MB) as a result it has been very difficult to manage our apps and data within the internal storage. So, to remove such low internal memory problem we are going to partition our sd card and then install the Darktremor Apps2SD Script so applications and games will install to this sd-ext partition that we are going to create by default and we won’t have to worry about low internal memory problem.

Before beginning it is assumed that you have a custom clockwork mod recovery and a custom rom is installed on your device. Alternatively, if you are in a stock firmware/rom and want to partition your sd card please Install Clock Work Mod Recovery and Flash a Custom Rom on your device. Also since partitioning your sd card will erase all your data stored in sd card, it is recommended that you backup your data to your computer. Now that you have backed up your data please follow these simple instructions to partition your sd card and install Darktremor App2sd script on your android smart phone.

1. Reboot your device into Clockwork Mod Recovery.

2. Go to Advance>>Partition SD Card option on your recovery and select a size for ext 3 partition. This will create an ext 3 file system partition on your sd card called sd-ext. The size of your sd-ext partition should be determined on the basis of how much apps and games you are going to install on your device. If you are not of type who wants to test every app or a normal user 2 GB of sd-ext partition should be enough. Determine the size that best suites you and proceed.

3. Also, select swap partition size as 0 Mb.

4. [Optional] Format your sd-ext from mounts and storage>>fromat /sd-ext option in CWM recovery.

5. Reboot your device and open a terminal emulator or shell commander and type in the following command to make sure that your second partition (aka sd-ext partition) is mounted at boot.
mount | grep sd-ext
You should see the following code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,nodelalloc,data=ordered)

6. Now download Darktremor Apps2SD and copy it to your sdcard.

7. Reboot your device in CWM recovery and then mount your data and system by going to mounts and storage>>mount /data and mounts and storage>>mount /system options respectively.

8. Now go back to main menu and go to install zip from sd>>choose zip from sdcard option and select the dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip file you downloaded from above.

9. After the script is installed reboot your device.

That’s all. You have successfully installed Darktremor Apps2SD on your device. Note that the device will reboot again after you reboot your device. This is just to move all your apps to the second partition (sd-ext partition) and is normal. Also if you want to manage your Apps2SD settings you can either use commands in terminal emulator or download this APPS2SDGUI application from market and manage everything from there. One of the useful command can be a2sd help. Try it on any terminal to see the help file that comes with Darktremor A2SD.

Here are some commands that you can run in terminal emulator for configuring a2sd. You can find more info about them as well as other commands by typing a2sd help command.
  • a2sd check : Checks a2sd status; displays information incl. where your apps, cahce and data are stored.
  • a2sd cachesd : Moves dalvik cache to sd-ext partition.
  • a2sd nocache : Moves dalvik cache back to internal storage.
  • a2sd datasd : Move /data/data to /sd-ext/data .
  • a2sd nodata : Move /sd-ext/data back to internal storage.
  • a2sd remove : Moves apps back to internal storage and sets no a2sd flag.
Now some precautions tips you should take in mind. After installing Darktremor Apps2SD don’t move your apps to sdcard either from Manage Applications Settings or by using app2sd pro or similar applications because it will ruin all your settings and your script will not work. Also you may notice that your used space in internal storage shown in Manage Applications Setting is not decreasing even after you install Apps2SD and you may think that the script is not working. But remember if you followed all the instructions from above and got the same results as explained above then the script is working. It is shown so because system is fooled to believe that the apps are in internal storage but in reality they are stored in the secondary partition we created (i.e. in /sd-ext/app folder) on your device.

Also this method is tested in Samsung Galaxy Pop gts-5570 having clock work mod recovery and running Gingerbread 2.3.5, Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 RC1 by tj_style and is working perfectly fine. It will probably work fine on any device having custom recovery and roms but don’t try it on stock roms because it won’t work. If you are having problem installing Darktremor A2SD Script, you can use this alternative method to move apps to sd-ext partition. Also, if you regret partitioning your sd-card or want to re-partition it again with different configurations or settings read the article 'How to Remove Second Partition of Your SD Card?' and then create the partition again.

Make sure you run mount grep | sd-ext command and get the same result as above (if not you have done something wrong asnd will have to repartition ur sdcard)
Make sure you mount your data and system in CWM recovery
ALso try to format your sd-ext from CWM recovery and then try again..

  14. Munshi, terminal emulator is an app you can get from market. Download it and install, and then type 'su' command first(for permissions) and then 'mount | grep sd-ext' commands without the quotes. Also note that you need to have rooted device (for super user permissions) and Custom recovery to do this.

    ReplyDelete
  15. hello, I tried this but failed. my phone is already rooted though, when I typed the commands it returned with a 'denied' =S

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nadine, Please read all comments to see if your query/problem has been already replied or not before asking anything. Anyway, you have to run the 'su' command first. Then it will prompt you to provide super user permissions to terminal emulator. Click on Allow button and then type the command 'mount | grep sd-ext' from above.

Also, please don't post your comment randomly, comment only on the article's page that you are talking about. It creates confusion and fails to maintain cleanness. Thanks!

  17. i did this and completed all the steps successfully so I get the same message in terminal emulator. but when I try to install angry birds or other 25-30 mb application I get an error.. It says something like there is not enough space in internal memory. so I cannot install many applications. What's the problem? Some says that the dalvik cache is limited and we need to move the cache onto the ext3 partition do you have any idea?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, its because of the limited cache size. You can move dalvik cache to sd-ext from APP2SDGUI app--that you can download from market-- OR, run the command 'a2sd cachesd' as root w/o quotes.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I did what you say.. But the same "There is insufficient space on the device" error keeps appearing while I'm trying to install applications.. I made a 2 gb of ext3 partition before and I moved dalvik cache on-ext using a2sdgui app. I see these information. Internal memory 156mb/178mb, sd-ext 65mb/206mb, cache 1mb/24mb.. I don't know what should I do :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. Akhisar4585, I suggest you install s2e (the alternative method mentioned above) from market and then check the download cache option there. It will transfer download cache to sd-ext partition. Also, please remove darktremor a2sd before doing so --if you are okay backup your apps with TB and then do a clean CM7 flash (wiping data)-- Or, run 'a2sd remove' command in terminal emulator.

Also, you can try downloading the app on your pc and then installing it manually using adb or package manager.

If any of the above don't work for you, you can request me for alternative. Also, include the name of app that you can't download while doing so.

  21. Can I do this on the stock froyo 2.2.2 rom for the glaxy mini? or does it have to be cm7

    ReplyDelete
  22. No, it is required that you have custom rom and recover to do this. You can use froyo's inbuilt A2SD feature or upgrade to gingerbread and then flash a custom rom as stated in this article:

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does your CM7 restarts every time or just the first time you flashed darktremor a2sd. If it does so only at the first time it is normal. And after that it will automatically move your apps to sd-ext. After flashing a2sd you don't need to do anything.

No, More number of time restarts, when i try to install new application

  26. Hey are you using OC kernels on your phone? Overclocking sometimes causes reboots when installing apps or using camera, navigation, etc.

Try to go before the point you installed a2sd --you can do a nandroid restore; I expect you have done a backup before starting-- and try again. Follow the steps carefully and everything should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Abhishek, Make sure you don't flash two zips at the same time in recovery. After flashing CM7,only flash other zips after at least one reboot. Also, if you are having problem wipe data and cache and then flash Darktremor a2sd.

Dejan, No it is the settings in CM Settings and partitioning is diffrent. The former one is Froyo's A2SD capability (moves apps to sdcard) while later one moves to sd-ext (partitioned partition). Also s2e and Darktremor are different. You can see I have separate article for s2e that automatically proves it. Please read carefully before asking queries.

  34. ok, so i looked into terminal and type a2sd cachesd and says permission denied, even if i installed the APS2D.. it still say permission denied.. why is that? is there a way to re-partition again? i intsalled aps2sd from market, theres only 3 tabs there(on phone, on SDCARD, only phone)

    ReplyDelete
  35. and also,i am still experiencing low memory error in downloading from market..is that normal?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ok! Thomas, if it says permission denied you must understand that it is talking about superuser permission/root access. So, run su command before running other commands. Try again after running 'su' command.

Yes, you can always repartition your sd-card. First remove the sd-ext partition (use the search bar) and then create one again using same procedure. And, if you are experiencing low memory problem it means your memory is almost full. Try removing some apps or transfer them to sd-ext.

    ReplyDelete
  37. never mind, its running now, but where are my apps? even the superuser and the market is missing....
    any idea?

    ReplyDelete
  38. i tried mounting sd ext and it says error mounting!
damn.. i must be doing wrong...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thomas, Are you saying you can't find superuser and market in your app drawer? If so it's a big problem and don't know how you got to it. Even, if you wiped data and cache they should be there as these apps are considered system apps and are not deleted even when wiping your data.

Else,if you are taking about apps not found on data/app folder, your apps should be inside sd-ext folder.

And why are you trying to mount sd-ext again.. Its just a one time task. Mount only just after you finish creating the partition.

I suggest you begin once again from start. Flash CM7>>Wipe data and cache>>Format sd-ext>>Flash Darktremor A2sd>>Check using terminal if A2SD installed successfully and then start using your phone.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i dont know bro, i just did what u said, move my apps to sd ext from the terminal emulator by a2sd cachesd, after boot, i saw my apps inside Apps Manager, but i cant use them, and also, i cant see their icons and yes, the superuser and market is missing.. i never knew its going to be this ugly.. well if i start again, would it be safe? and what about the partition ive done? was it going to be overwritten if i flash again?

    ReplyDelete
  41. somethings wrong with my sdcard, i wipe everything and format it to get it ready for flashing again. when i connect it to pc, it goes around 12GB!! its a 16GB SD... how can i make it to 16 again?

    ReplyDelete
  42. nevermind i got it working thou

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks Yagya, i got it working...this going to be my last question, swear! can i used S2E instead Dark tremor's?? if yes, do i need to uninstall dark tremor or not? how?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thomas, it is showing 12 GB because you created (maybe) 4 GB sd-ext partition. And, since sd-ext partition is ext3 filesystem (linux file system)it is not shown on windows. To view se-ext partition or ext3/4 partition on Windows PC use ext2explorer(recommended, no setup needed) or linux reader (setup required).

No, sd-ext partition is not removed simply by flashing a new rom/firmware. It is somewhat integrated within the hardware. If you want to remove it and recreate another partition read this:
    http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-remove-second-partition-of-your.html

Yes, you can use s2e instead of darktremor app2sd, but don't use both. Here is how to install it http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/10/s2e-way-of-moving-apps-to-sd-card-for.html . And, yes you need to unistall darktremor before using s2e. run 'a2sd remove' command on terminal to remove darktremor a2sd. If you have more app than your internal memory, you might get into trouble if you unistall a2sd. There is more info in the link to install s2e above.

  45. Hey yagya, i have installed it successfully, but there is another problem thati hope you encountered, at S2E, when i check the dalvik and download cache at s2e, and reboots my phone, stucked into boot, that spinnig logo... why is that?

  46. and yeah i ended up flashing it again and repartition it again... this is endless..... im going to use a2sd instead...

    ReplyDelete
  47. help yagya! I flashed back my galaxy to gingerbread 2.3.4. i successfully done it and also the CWM.. when i wiped the cache it goes like this(with sdcard)
make_extf4fs failed on dev block mmcblk0p2

yes, its an error, and without sd card, it goes like this: error mounting sd card .android secure

and then my phone is stuck on boot until now... what am i gonna do??

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thomas, I guess you messed up with creating a partition and unless it is a typo, according to you you have partitioned your sd card many times --instead you needed to do this only once.

Here is what you do now. Stop your phone (pull the battery or do whatever to shut it down.) Then delete the second partition and create a single FAT 32 partition on your sd-card. Here is a simple explanation on that:
    http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-remove-second-partition-of-your.html
You can also partition using the tool mentioned here and create one Ext3 (sd-ext partition) and another FAT32 (sdcard) for your memory card. If you don't understand what I mean do only as it says in the article.

Then this time carefully follow everything and then start from 0 i.e. again flash GB. Now put your sdcard in and use your phone for sometime. Then flash CWM recovery. And flash CM7. Wipe Data and cache. Use your CM7 and then reboot to Recovery. Partition your sd-card (do this only once unless you have deleted your second partitioned as mentioned on the link above). Format your sd-ext (optional). Mount your sd-ext at boot (see the code above; also do this only once). Now reboot and flash A2SD as above and then reboot. You are all done. Restore data and sd-ext using Backup and Restore>>Advance Restore if you have a nandroid backup.

Follow above carefully. Its might take few hours but it will be worth it. And now nothing will go wrong --you have added experience too.

  49. no, i've done removing partition, and it has only 1 FAT32 part, and i had GB on (rooted).. the problem is that, whenever i flash CWM, there is a "BIG PARTITION SIZE!!!" issue in odin and, but, then, i passed the process.. now, i reboot in CWM, and it has issue saying:
make_extf4fs failed on dev block mmcblk0p2 when i wipe cache. when i reboot, the loop starts, and im going back to CWM again and wipe the dalvik, cache, partition. and reboots, then i goes looping again. i tried removing the sdcard but still no luck,.i bet it is something about that BIG PARTITION SIZE thing that i encountered at odin, could it be.. and also, i had followed each and every step you gave me, and im thankful that youre helping me out here, but if theres nothing we can do then, ill stick to GB

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thomas, try formatting your sd-card. Also, I heard going back to Froyo KC1 , stock rom and then starting again might solve the problem.

  55. Mrahmanda, Maybe there was some error flashing a2sd. Are you sure you followed all the instructions carefully. Try flashing the zip once again by removing current a2sd. Type a2sd remove in Terminal EMulator to remove darktremor a2sd. Then flash zip file. Remember, partitioning and mounting are to be done only once. You need to flash zip when you upgrade/flash new roms.

Also, if you are still not able to solve it try the alternative s2e give at the bottom of the post. It will work for you for sure.

  56. I follow all your steps from #1 to #4. I am stuck on #5 and I got the message "Permission denied" even though I try to use su or sudo command. This means I am also unsuccessful of releasing the command mount | grep sd-ext. Am not sure whether my device is rooted as it is version 2.3.4 with baseband version S5570DXKPD that Samsung center has upgraded for me. Can you please help me to succeed this? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Chanchoth, I'm really sorry if I have forgot to include/say it on the post above. But, you need custom rom for this to work. It doesn't work on stock GB rom. Both Darktermor App2sd and S2E are for custom roms. I suggest you flash any custom rom if you want app2sd.

Custom roms are comes rooted so your warranty is voided automatically. Also, you will loose Samsung Support from your device such as Kies Support, OTA update, etc. if you flash custom rom (not all though, Emanon has Samsung Support)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Zack,
I don't know how you are getting the error. make sure you partition your sdcard using CWM recovery and do this only once. (From what you are saying you partitioned again and again, which you should have done.) Find the removing sd-ext from sdcard tutorial here and remove all the partition to resote your sdcard to previous state.

Now, Put it back to your phone.
Partition it using CWM recovery as said above.
Open terminal and type the command mount | grep sd-ext . If you get any error then probably your sd-ext partition is not created properly. you can check it using root explorer.
Once everything is ok, then flash darktremor a2sd.

If you are getting any error, then I suggest you go back to GB adn then Flash CWM recovery then partition your sdcard and then after only falsh cm7. All the best!

  65. And another question are I also install Apps2SD GUI, but can I know how am I suppose to set the A2SD setting, Dalvik setting? And is it normal in the Apps2SD system info it detect that my SD-EXT total memory is only 206mb even the size that I partition my sd are 1024mb?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yagya,
i did it ! when recorvery after i mount system and data i wipe data & cache and finish :)
    thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  67. hey yagya i was able to do this successfully already by following your instructions carefully but i just want to ask, after i moved the dalvik cache via a2sdgui from the market can i still use apps 2 sd application from the market as well to move applications to sd card???.... or no need??

    ReplyDelete
  68. darthsyaz,
It depends if you have moved only apps to sd-ext (which it does by default after falshing) then your internal memory is also used by dalvik cache and other data. However, if you use APP2SDGUI app to move dalvik cache to sd-ext then your internal storage might be empty. To learn more on how to use a2sd try the command, a2sd help with root permissions (su command).

Also, the sd-ext should have shown the actual size. However it might be because you have already used other space. If you are ok with you try formatting sd-ext (it will remove all your apps).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Zack,
No, don't use app 2 sd from market after using darktremor a2sd and A2SDGUI app. a2sd will automatically install all your apps to sd-ext partition of your sdcard so you don't need to worry about anything now.

  73. no need to worry... It's pefectly fine and you can move ahead (I think the remaining part is on the next line)...

Anyway... good luck. complete rest steps and you will be done.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi yagya...

I just followed the steps from 1-4, downloaded terminal emu.. btw, I have cm7 music edition. When I used the command on the step 5. I got something different..
    /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,node)

    - I dont see this: lalloc,data=ordered)

Do I need to worry? or do repartition of my SD. I have 8GB and i just allocated 1gh on ext-3

    ReplyDelete
  75. No need to worry. You can proceed to further steps. also the remaining part might be there somewhere on the next line.

  76. Hi Yagya,
Thanks for nice article. I have few questions/issues.
    1. How to make sure that I have successfully partitioned SD card?
    2. Now when I try to insert the card in the card reader, windows 7 asks me to format else it does not allow to access the content. When I connect through USB the copying speed is too slow. Any idea why the speed is too slow and how make sure that I can read from card reader?

    ReplyDelete
  77. If you have paritioned successfully you should see the above code/result when running  mount | grep sd-ext command from above.  Also, your sd-card size shown on windows will decrease since it can't figure out ext partitions.

The slow data transfer is not your fault. It's the fault with USB cable that provides slow data speed.. it's same for all. And., sd-card should work fine from card reader too. why don't you backup your data first and then format it and give it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thanks Yagya. I can see what you are saying. I still have one small query.  Till yesterday, my phone was showing as free internal memory to 138 MB. Today I run the backup from CWM and after that I think it is showing free internal memory as 32 MB. I dont what happened suddenly.  Also it should show the available memory from the SD-EXT partition right?

    ReplyDelete
  79. whew.. great yagya.. thanks much!!

by the way... if I will flash my phone's cwm from 4 to 5.. or any flash like switching or changing roms.. do i need to run darktremor's scripts or re-partitioning my sd again?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hey Yagya,
I was able to see everything fine till yesterday. But as per your suggestion when I formatted the card to read from card reader, something went wrong and mount | grep sd-ext does not show anything. Also windows show 4 GB less which means I have lost the partition and also the space. The link for Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
is broken and I am not able to download the app. Can you please help to fix?

    ReplyDelete
  81. When I use the MiniTool Partition Wizard it did not show me ext partition. I mean it shows as unallocated and no file system type. Hence I deleted the partition and came back to my original memory card with 16 GB. After doing partition, I was not able to read the card from card reader. Hence I formatted the card which caused some issue in partition. I have to revert to my original card. I think it is safer to move your apps manually to SD card using titanium or gemini app than using SD-EXT partition.

  82. it can work on 2.3.6? and i have 2.3.6 can i  Flash a Custom Rom  cwm7?

    ReplyDelete
  83. You will have to partition your sdcard only once. However if you change/flash another rom then you will need to flash the a script again. Also, you don't need to flash a2sd while changing clock work mod recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I see.. how about removing the script.. because I will try to use ungaze instead of darktremor.. how would I do that?

    ReplyDelete
  85. i hwae 2.3.6 but after clock w.reco... flshing cutom rom dos not work.and without flashing custom rom many massege on a2sd like "cannot be extpartition"or invalid script"or2 invalid argument"or "grep not found"or "aka not found"  something like that .....ill try to go 2.3.4 but in odin fail on firmware download.then back again on 2.3.6 and 2 time partition and link2sd then its working but this a2sd more good then link2sd.......and iwant this a2sd ........can anybody help me for full tutorial........i know yagya s tutorial very good but ill try many time .........any other......

    ReplyDelete
  86. So, here are overview of steps to follow to get a2sd. For detailed info find respective article.
First make sure you have any version of Gingerbread rom.
Then flash Clock work mod recovery v4.0.0.5 (not v5.0.2.6).
After flashing clock work mod recovery flash any of the custom rom in recovery. CM7 is a good rom so try it.
When you have got a custom rom follow above steps to partition your sd-card and then install a2sd. [Partitioning will remove all data in sdcard].
YOu are done. Follow all the steps carefully and I am sure you will get it. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Maybe your a2sd script simply stopped working, Check to make sure. Also, you can see used sd-ext memory by using Root Explorer and navigating to /sd-ext/folder at the top.

    ReplyDelete
  88. How to check whether the script is running correctly or not?

    ReplyDelete
  89. While you may consider so, using a2sd and moving apps like that is quite different and I have tried to outline the differences in this article http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-install-applications-to-sd-card.html
Also, partitioning using apps like MiniTools requires previous experience or knowledge, lack of which can lead to problems like yours. So, it is recommended to partition via Clock Work Mod Recovery and that too only once.

    ReplyDelete
  90. to see if the script is working well or not use APP2SDGUI app from market or just run the following command in terminal emulator :
    a2sd check
    or/and a2sd help
You will see details if your apps are on internal or external card and such other info.

    ReplyDelete
  91. To remove the script you simply, run a2sd remove command on terminal emulator. Please note this command will move all your apps to internal memory.

    ReplyDelete
  92. The sd-Ext folder does not have any data which means that script is not working correctly. What is the fix for this?

    ReplyDelete
  93. No, that it's not the case. To have some days in sd-ext folder you must install some apps first. As I suggested please use APP2SDGUI app to see if the script is working out not. Also, for the script to work make sure you have mount /system and /data in recovery before flaking the script.

    ReplyDelete
  94. hey yagyagaire
you are really doing a great job
but i have a little problem so plss help me if u can
i have been upgraded firmware of galaxy mini to 2.3.4 and then installed andro-id v3.2 by CWM when i open the menu of phone i see that  rom have pre installed app2sdgui but its not working so pls help mee plsss to how to move apps to sd card by using this app i have been reading your articles every day but i am little confuse to what to do to move apps plsssss

    ReplyDelete
  95. You are at the right place so don't worry. For moving apps to sd-ext using that app, you will need to first partition your sd card and create the sd-ext folder. So, go ahead and create one , follow the steps above for that, and once you are done flash the dark tremor a2sd script. After that you can use the APP2SDGUI app to configure the settings of a2sd.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hello,

Your tutorial was an important piece of my research before i implemented a2sd on my device.
    thanks,

    Need a few clarification however...

When i was done installing the CM7, Google apps and DT a2sd zip files my internal memory reads as ...

    Used : 41MB

I re-installed around 50 of my apps from the market (though i had them backed up on titanium backup and could have easily restored) with the fear of breaking the a2sd implementation i had just run.

Now my used internal memory reads as...

    Used : 117MB

Is this normal or my a2sd implementation has failed ??

    thnx

    ReplyDelete
  97. It is normal to be so... you can check that your apps are at /sd-ext/apps/ folder if you doubt me. The space is used by dalvik cache and some other cache but you can also move them to sd-ext folder (however, I don't recommend doing so) through the command a2sd cachesd in terminal emulator.

    ReplyDelete
  98. hey Yagya! im getting a problem on terminal emulator, i typed in su

mount | grep sd-ext nothing seemed to happen , it showed grepsd-ext: not found, should i try the partition again?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Did you partitioned correctly? Check your sd-card size on your Windows PC to see if it has reduced or not. If it is not reduced then you will need to partition again. Be careful and follow all the instructions properly. Also, I hope you are not trying to do this on stock rom since it won't recognize the sd-ext (ext3) partition.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Im running on emanoN v4, nothing seems to be happening on terminal emulator, and yeah the space has reduced from 2gb to  about 1gb after the 1 gb partiton, ive not done anything after step 5.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oops... My mistake. I forgot to mention that the support for a2sd script has been drop down by the developer in emanon v4 rom. Please, use s2e for that purpose, Or if you want a2sd you may switch to previous version, or if you want both emanon v4 and a2sd then here is what the developer has to say Not supporting darktremor anymore. If you want to use regular swap over compressed swap (not recommended), disable compcache in init.d (but, I don't recommend doing so) .

So, if you want to use a2sd disable compcache and try again.

    ReplyDelete
  102. then how could i fix this?
(advanced mode is on) :/ sorry to bother you with these questions , im pretty much a noob at this

    ReplyDelete
  103. What do you want to fix? After you have partitioned, install s2e (I am sure it it already installed in emanon v4) then select what you want to move to sd-ext folder in s2e app and then simply reboot. It will move your app to sd-ext. For more detail please search s2e article here and go through it. Or, you can simply remove the sd-ext and use internal memory as suggested in previous comment.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hi Yagya! Thanks for everything given above. However there is a big problem that happened. As you previously said that a2sdgui doesnot work on Emanonv4 I used s2e. I check-marked devlik-cache and it told me to reboot the phone. Now after reboot my phone is stuck at the droid boot screen and phone is not starting. Please help me out

    ReplyDelete
  105. Well no problem, go to Advance Options in CWM Recovery and Wipe Dalvik cache and reboot. It should/will reboot fine (but will take some time) then in s2e move dalvik cache back to internal memory. It is recommended that you keep dalvik cache in internal memory because it doesn't take much memory as well as it can be accessed very fast in internal memory. Only move apps and data to sd-ext, you can also move download cache if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I wiped off the dalcik cache in advanced menu as you instructed. However after reboot, when I open S2E (which is built-in app in my emanonv4 rom) the option of moving dalvik cache is disabled so I couldn't check-mark it. Moreover on the top line of S2E app it shows as "DATA:148MB EXT: --" does this mean that my partition is not correctly done? And the most important tning that whenever I Install any app from market (for e.g Link2SD), just after installation phone performs a quick reboot and doesnot show my installed app in the menu. Please help me out

    ReplyDelete

  108. The in the s2e app, application moving was un available (notice the grey text instead of the white), anyway i changed to CM and it's all good :) thank you for ur help :)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Sorry, but I don't seem to get what you mean. Also, I haven't use s2e so know very little about it. Why don't you give darktremor a2sd a try. Also, for market fix run these commands on terminal emulator
    su
    stockmem

If that doesn't work try this command too
    cachetodata

    ReplyDelete
  110. hi yayga... just want to know if 4GB card is enough for partion?

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yes, That's enough since you need a sd-ext partition max of 1 GHz ( I think it's enough for all kinds of users). But, it also depends upon personal choice and how much sd-card space you need. If you have lot of songs, videos then you might want a card with higher capacity.

    ReplyDelete
  112. No, need to undo. You can use s2e which fulfills the same purpose as darktremor a2sd and is much easier to get started, simply install and run the s2e app. Or, if you want to revert back please search for how to remove second partition of your sdcard article here in this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  113. well then how could i undo whatever i just did?
     :/

    ReplyDelete
  114. I guess that's a bit difficult task. One way is to use adb to pull all the required files to your PC. But, I don't think they can be restored if you brick your phone. Again, if it is a soft brick then it can be fixed simply by flashing the stock samsung firmwares that I have provided in Roms and Utilities, but for Hard brick you might want to go directly to the Samsung SErvice Center for repair or renewal.

    take care...

    ReplyDelete
  117. hi again... just want to clarify some things... since darktremor ap2sd doesnt work on GB(hope im right)... can i still play HD games like eternal HD, GTA or any QVGA games
     on cynogem mod ?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes, you are right since there is no way to run a script at boot automatically, I am quite sure a2sd won't work. But, you can use Link2sd and probably some others (not sure though).  I think you can play those games however, having a custom build with OC and Chainfire3D can help you play more smoothly.

    ReplyDelete
  119. hello..just curious in one thing...if i flash my mini to another rom do i need to reinstall the script?
    thank you in advance :)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Yes, it is always needed to reinstall the script after changing roms. However, note that partitioning is done only once. If you don't want to go through the hassle then you can use s2e instead.

    ReplyDelete
  121. so..i just need to go to terminal, i mean type the "mount | grep..." then flash the zip file?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Yes, that's it. But make sure you partition your sd-card first before doing all this.

    ReplyDelete
  123. it says grep permission denied after step 5

    ReplyDelete
  124. Try su command first and then make sure you are typing the command correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  125. urgent : i m stuck at terminal emulator
after typing the command nothings happens

    ReplyDelete
  126. Yes, write the command there first su and then the one from above. Make sure you have partitioned your sd-card. Go to Recovery and format /sd-ext partition in Mounts and Storage option and try again.

    ReplyDelete
  127. thanks ... one more problem ... after doing as per above ... i flashed to CM7 rc5.2 ... and now it seems App2sd is not working .. although it shows 1 gb less memory when i check it in storage ... should i partition again ... or is there any other trick?

    ReplyDelete
  128. hi yagya, would you mind correcting my understanding, with this procedure all apps and games that will be installed will automatically be save on the partitioned card, but I can still move my apps and games manually by going to manage applications ? is this correct sire?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Most part is right except that you can't move apps manually as you like. Though you get the liberty to do so, it's not recommended since it breaks the a2sd settings and your system might be unstable.
The fact is that the system considers your sd-ext as internal memory and thus, there is no point in doing so. It install some a2sd enabled apps (or data) to sd-card itself just as it did without using the script.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Cheers, your guide works. It's also much easier to follow than the ones on xda.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Cheers! These guides are easier to follow that's why http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com is recommended when one need anything related to Galaxy pop/mini. Make sure you enjoy learning while you are here and don't forget to spread the words.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Sir, which is better S2E or Dark's Script ? and if either of this two installed, can i still install V6 supercharger?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Either you haven't partitioned your sd-card or your sd-ext is corrupted. Go to CWM recovery and format your sd-ext parition and try again. If that doesn't help try to remove your sd-ext (search here for it) and then start all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Both are good and both do the job very well... S2E is much easier to use because of it's GUI interface. Yes, you can still use V6 supercharger even after using any of the two scripts.

    ReplyDelete
  135. its taking a long time to partition D: Do i risk bricking the phone?

    ReplyDelete
  136. You probably don't risk to brick your device, but your sdcard might have problems. Also, it ought not to take so long time. Are you following the instructions carefully. Go to CWM recovery>Advance>Partition SDCARD and after few questions/selection you are done.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Finally its working! i guess? followed all instruction carefully should i use the a2sd cachesd command? for moving the new installed games and apps?

    ReplyDelete
  138.  I also tried the a2sd check and i see alot of PERMISSION DENIED.. is this normal?

    ReplyDelete
  139. No, not needed. As you can see above the command you mentioned is for moving dalvik cache to sd-ext partition and hence it is not recommended to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  140. You need to run these commands as root user. So that meas run su command at first to avoid permission error.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Cheers! thx alot! :D uhm btw how can i check if my apps is on the >>  /sd-ext/apps/ folder?? i didnt see it on the a2sd check command, tried to use the MINI TOOL and I see that it has a 7% usage..?

    ReplyDelete
  142. Navigate to /sd-ext/app folder using root explorer and then there you will see your apps which signals that a2sd is working correctly. Also, if you read the output of the a2sd check command carefully then it will tell if you apps are on internal or external storage. You can also check it with APP2SDGUI app from market.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Hello yagya, I dont have the root explorer so I tried to use the Total Commander then navigate to  /sd-ext/app and there I see the apps i installed, i guess its working fine.. no doubt now! :) thx!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I am stuck on A N D R O I D logo after partitioning.
    Hlp.
I can't even restore as SD is formatted.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Wipe data and cache and reboot again. You can also shut down your mini and then put your backup in sdcard (form PC using card reader) and then restore the backup.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I to mounted sd card by using mount in CWM and transferred backup but recovery did not find it. So I flashed stock firmware ,  flashed cwm and then restored backup. Why did this happen. I was running CM7.2 RC5 by squadzone on galaxy mini.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I think the CWM would find the backup if you had reboot the recovery (in Advance menu) or just reboot your device and go to recovery again. It might not have got enough time or (it might not be programmed to) look for changes in sd-card while you are using recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  148. i am a complete novice but still did my best to follow the instructions exactly. after i installed the zip file rebooted my phone (galaxy ace) nothing has happened. it is exactly as it was. (i also do not understand all this talk of command etc..dumb i know)

    ReplyDelete
  149. ok command talk sorted, download android terminal emulator

    ReplyDelete
  150. ok after typing in a2sd check i get
    block device                           -[]not found
                                                  [] sd card cannot mount
    does that help?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Before flashing the zip file make sure you have partitioned your external memory ; to check if you partitioned you card or not be running the above mount command in terminal emulator and then if you get similar results then follow the steps afterward to flash the zip file. Make sure you mount system and data partitions first before flashing and then reboot your device after flashing it. Now install apps2sdgui app from market and you will notice it says apps are in sdcard or SD ext partition. You can also navigate to the root of your system and then look inside /sd-ext folder if any apps you have installed aye there or not. If they are there then a2sd us working fine else, try again. Or, you can use s2e instead since it is easier to setup.

    ReplyDelete
  152. i think the problem is it is not partitioning properly because i cant find a sd ext folder, but the script did say that the partition was complete. or maybe because i do not have cyanogen maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  153. In which ROM are you trying to do this. Note that you need to have any custom ROM or a room that supports ext partitions. so, flash a new ROM and then try again.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Thanks for your tutorial.I partitioned SD card, and installed Darktremor . i think it is working fine  because i found apps in the sd-ext. But when i install apps sometimes the internal storage is reducing. why?

    ReplyDelete
  155. That's because of the dalvik cache and you probably need not worry about it since it won't eat much memory. However, if you want to move it then you can use the commands I have listed above or APP2SDGUI app and configure it.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Every thing was going fine, but suddenly while installing a new application it got failed, i changed the install location to internal on cyanagon mod, then tried installing it.But phone suddenly turned off and restarted  . I was not able to install any application.. then i formatted sd-ext and installed s2e. It was working fine only problem is  while booting, before appearing the boot animation it restarts (up to the word android comes and flashes off) 2 times, only the third time it get booted normally.

    ReplyDelete
  157. You didn't read my articles clearly. If you read carefully you will find that you shouldn't mess with install location once you flash a2sd scripts. After flashing the script you don't need to worry at all since it will manage everything for you --where to install which apps and all. So, next time don't play with the settings and you will be fine.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  158. /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext2 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,nodelalloc,data=ordered)
why is it that when I typed the grep thing, it said sd-ext type ext2 instead of ext3?

    ReplyDelete
  159. Not all roms support ext 3 or ext4 partitions. So, if you have partitioned on any of such rom then CWM will create ext 2 partitions so that it can be used with your current rom. It is probably fine and you can carry on with the a2sd installation procedure.

  162. If you have upgraded your ROm then you will need to flash the script again. Once again flash a2sd script in recovery after mounting system and data partitions and then install app2sdgui app from market and configure it. Or, if it is getting that hard go for s2e app which is very simple instead.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Try s2e app since it is very simple and I think just perfect for you. Find it here and go through the instructions. :)

    ReplyDelete
  168. I guess it's only you. I have used a2sd and it worked fine for me, now I am using s2e for moving apps to partition and it is also working fine. Try once again. Make sure you have set a google account that is working.

    ReplyDelete
  169. is this tutorial works for galaxy ace too? i'm going to try it but i'm afraid that this isn't for ace.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Yes, it is for ace too. Don't worry and give it a go.

    ReplyDelete
  171. okay, i'll try. one more question ,if i want to flash another custom rom, do i have to do the SD Card Partition and install the Darktremor again?

    ReplyDelete
  172. do i need to apply this sd partitioning if i flash other custom rom?

    ReplyDelete
  173. No, as stated above partitioning is done only once. But, installation of a2sd script is a must if you flash another custom rom.

    ReplyDelete

  182. No idea. Use mini tools to get more information about your partition. YOu can alternatively remove it and then create again by following instructions from above. You can find references or help right here --just use the search bar.

  186. emanoN v5 is just the kind of rom for you. It is a custom rom with support for cool new features but the look is same as stock Gingerbread. Give it a try and see how you feel about it. Yes, a2sd scripts require init.d scripts support which is not found in most stock roms.

  187. If you remove the whole sdcard then your apps installed in sd-ext partition will be lost. But the system is intelligent enough to install system apps within system ROM, which should never cause any problems to you.

  194. Yagya Gaire thank you very much, i followed your instruction and i installed this script without problems.
But, before installing this you mentioned to backup data from the sd-card, after installing this , i returned the backup-ed files to sd , and now i miss the old apps that was installed on SD , like facebook etc.
Is anyway to replace them from SD to sd-ext or just i need to uninstall and install them again?

Again thank you for your support and tutorial!

  195. Note that even with s2e or a2sd only apps that do not support native app2sd are moved to sd-ext partition. Those apps that support app2sd will be installed in .android_secure folder in sd-card as usual and some might use Android and data folders in sd-card to store data or files.

Now, if you didn't do a backup of your sd-card then, you'll need to install them again. If you did then, also it is better to install such apps again as their data (which was stored in internal memory) is probably deleted and thus, they'll appear as a black/grey icons in manage applications app.

  196. So funny , after performing this command in Terminal Emulator "a2sd remove" the phone rebooted again and now i am able to install apps :)
I have and one last question if you are not tired from me :P

HTC CHacha has 150MB internal memory , so , in simple2ext which is the best choise to be checked?
    Applications /data or /sd-exst ?
    Private apps /data/app-private or /sd-ext ?
    Application Data /data/data or /sd-ext?
    Dalvik chache /cache/dalvid-cache or /sd-ext ?
    Download cache /cachedownload or /sd-ext ?

  197. You shouldn't have messed with the Allow Application Moving option. Try unchecking it and then configure your s2e once again and reboot. If the problem still persist you'll need to re-install your rom and then install s2e or a2sd and configure it and reboot. s2e or a2sd are enough so, don't touch Allow application moving option again.

  198. Hey Yagya.

I bought an 8GB SD Card the other day but it didnt work on my phone. The guy at the shop said that Galaxy Mini S5570 can not handle it. So I am stuck on my 2gb SD Card.
I just wanted to ask you if partitioning this 2GB SD Card, will I be able to make the partition to 500MB ?
The original 180MB for apps is way too low, and I think I could do with 500MB somehow.

Please let me know, and thanks for all the effort you put in this amazing blog.
