Cyanogen Mod 9 - Beta 2 For Samsung Galaxy Mini/Pop.

This article is an follow up to my previous article where I wrote about Beta 1 release of the famous and awaited Ice Cream Snadwich based Cyanogen Mod 9 custom rom. Today, the developer has made another version (Beta 2) available for galaxy mini/pop gt-s5570 users to test and give it a try. With this release he has tried to fix most of the important bugs and it has been improved very well. But, still in it's beta stage, Cyanogen Mod 9 rom is not a good custom rom for daily activities, since Camera and Radio are not working at all and many other small bugs are present in the rom. However, if you want to have a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich on your android powered smartphone then this is a rom to try.

So, here's an overview of this beta 2 release of CM9. You can view the full list of things which the developer has listed as working in his original thread post at xda-developers forums.
  •  Keypad works fine.
  • Touchscreen ( Multitouch ) works.
  • SD Card and USB Storage Mounting is possible.
  • Call and  SMS work fine.
  • Bluetooth, GPS, Mobile Data and WiFi are also working.
  • Mic, audio and video are working fine.
  • Headset works. ( Only stock Headset or headset with same jack ( 4 pin)).
  • There is slight calibration problem. So, you might notice problem with auto rotate.
  • Live Wallpaper installed on the phone doesn't work but  if you use from market, they will work fine.
  • WiFi tethering ( using wifi tether 3.1 ) and USB tethering ( using wired tether 1.4 ) is possible. Download the apps and get started for tethering.
  • Default keyboard will work with 3rd party app LCD Resolution. Set the LCD density around 90-100 and it will work.
  • Market and Browser download is fixed.
  • Hardware Acceleration works but some time screen is low at flicker.
  • Camera is still not working and is in progress towards the solution.
So, this is all about  CM9 beta 2. If you want a more clear picture you will have to flash the rom and give it a try. Download the rom from below and flash it using the instructions thereafter.

P.S. This is just a beta release and thus, it is sure to have bugs, errors and stability issues.
TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Note: If you already have a custom roms like Cyanogen Mod 7 or emanoN rom then you may skip step 1 and 2.

1. Upgrade your firmware to Gingerbread 2.3.4/2.3.6 using Odin Multidownloader v4.38.

2. Install Clock Work Mod Recovery v4.0.0.5 using Odin. Please install v4.0.0.5 as said since there is some problem flashing with CWM recovery v5.0.2.6. [Flashing with CWM recovery v5.0.2.6 worked fine for me.]
3. Copy the rom file, update-cm-9.0.0-BETA2-GalaxyMini-KANG-signed.zip, you downloaded from above to (the root directory of) your sd-card.
4. Reboot your device to Clock Work Mod Recovery (Press Home + Power Button).

5. [Optional but, Recommended] Do a Nandroid Backup of your current rom.

6. Choose Install Zip From Sd Card>>Choose Zip From SD Card option and then select the update-cm-9.0.0-BETA2-GalaxyMini-KANG-signed.zip file you downloaded from above.

7. After it finishes flashing go to CWM recovery Main Menu.

8. Select Wipe Data  and Wipe Cache options.

9. Reboot your device from CWM Recovery main menu.

That's it. You now have Android 4.0.3 powered smartphone running Cyanogen Mod 9 rom. Look through it for a while and get a good taste or latest Ice Cream Sandwich. Please, leave a short review of the rom after looking in it for a while. While you enjoy this beta version let's hope a more stable version of CM9 to be made available for the galaxy mini/pop users. Also, make sure you thank the developer (squadzone) for this awesome rom at his own  Cyanogen Mod 9 thread on xda forum.

  7. 123google123,
If you will lose data or not depend on how you flash it. If you wipe data and cache your apps and data will be lost, but if you don't they might be preserved. But, sometimes wiping data maynot be option (you will need to wipe data if you are stuck at ANDROID logo). So, in that case you might lose all your data if you don't have a backup of it.

So, the best practice is to always do such backups when you are to flash a new rom.

    @Balaji,
More stable release will take time. Please, try this beta 2 release for that while or wait for it to be developed.

    @Mini_Gene,
Well, it's your choice. If you are that scared or fear you will lose your current stable version then you may wait for next release of CM9. Good Luck anyway.!

  8. does 3rd party cam n radio apps work wit this rom? .

    ReplyDelete
  9. I-MAN,
No, you can't use both Radio and Camera even with third party apps. However, Radio might just work for the first time if you use Spirit FM (you can give it a try, but it won't work well for sure).

  10. Does this support more than 2+ fingers in multitouch? Cos official firmware i think only support 2 points.

    ReplyDelete
  11. kuririn,
I guess it does support that... but am not sure about it. Since, this is also made out of base ANdroid 4.0.3 it should work fine if it works with Android 4 OS.

  12. Thanks for the reply. Is it okay to flash any rom (custom or official) as long as im using gingerbread? I mean if im on cm 9 right now,can i go back to cm7 or lower version?there is no limitations?

  13. kuririn,
Yes, it is okay to flash any rom as long as you are in GB and have CWM recovery installed. Make sure you wipe data and cache after flashing a rom.

  14. Thanks for info and correct method of install. Everything in beta 2 has been fixed to my liking but simply because camera does not work (I tried 3rd party app on beta 1) I will wait for stable release. If you don't have a problem with no camera I suggest downloading beta 2. Maybe a little laggy at first but it levels out after a while trust me. It's a lovely interface =), fraser from xda with galaxy mini

  16. Balaji,
I guess you are too excited for Ice Cream Sandwich (why not? anyone would be excited for CM9). However, development is a long process and I suggest you wait for some while. I will definitely update you when we get a stable version. So, just cool down!

  19. Hi Yagya,

This is Balaji. I installed the cyanogenmod 9 beta 2. And backup all the information by using cwm 4.0.0.5. Now if I want old apps and information, so in advance restore mode, what are thing I should restore back. i.e. (Restore boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext). Please let me know, as soon as possible.

  20. Balaji,
It depends what you want back and what was the condition of your device before flashing CM9. However, generally you restore data and sd-ext only. If your apps are only in sd-ext and you don't need to restore settings, contacts, etc then no need to restore data too.

  24. Is it lagging or something like the earlier build? beta 1 was lagging like crap

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's improved a little. But, since it is in beta version you are sure to face lags and bugs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What's the status of the Stable version, any ideas on how long we have to wait for it?

    ReplyDelete
  27. The work on this is going on since Galaxy Mini is not supposed to support ICS, it is natural to take some time for modifications and bug fixes. Please, be patience and don't ask for ETAs. I will keep you updated here when latest release is avaialble. You can also follow me in Facebook and twitter for more updates.

  28. I installed and tested the CM9 beta2 which I got from the above link. What I noticed was:
    - The camera is not working- The keyboard is not working (I can't find $ sign ...etc.. and the keyboard character like B: and spacebar due to I do not see a full keyboard)- Setting timezone is not workingIs there any solution on this? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The bugs you mentioned are all know bugs and the developer is working for the camera fix as well as other problems. For the keyboard problem, you can use any another keyboard and it will show up completely and work fine too.

  31. Flash gingerbread firmware using Odin; it's basically the same instructions as when upgrading to gingerbread. So find a similar article here and follow it.

  33. Make sure your Kies is closed/disabled. ALso, you need to have drivers install for your PC to recognize your device.

  34. the mod was successfully installed but my phone is rebooting again and again...the home screen comes for less than 3 sec and it again reboots the phone..plzz help!

  35. Try wiping data, cache and dalvik cache in Clockwork mod recovery. Also, if you are using Overclocking kernels then make sure you lower down the Max CPU frequency around 604 MHz.

  36. I think it would be better if 'squadzone' add new folder option(
ics type ) and the music player should be replaced with  the  official google music player v4.0.9 (Here)
